Addiction is a general word because there are different kind of addictions. Nowaday, people are addicted to a lot of things not only internet or drug, also some type of food, drink, shopping and more.
Some drug addicts come into crime in order to support their habit. Addiction is a strong and harmful need to regularly have something (such as a drug) or do something (such as gamble).
Some synonyms of addiction are habit and dependence.
For example: His life has been ruined by heroin addiction.
Some people are confused about what addiction is I am not addicted if I can control my habit or wishes, in contrast I am if I dependence of something and I cannot live without using it.
