The Internet and other addictions
I think anyone who spends more than 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use could be called an internet addict. It's not difficult to get addicted to the internet because there are a lot of things that all day the web is a flood of ideas, sometimes very interesting but not always because you can stay all day wasting the most important we have, our time instead of to be with the people that we love, our children, our mother or father, visiting an ill person etc.
According to Bill a student at the University of Maryland who doesn't want his last name used said recently: he, surfs the internet probably 8-10 hours a day, most days. He doesn't know, but he can't get through the day without being online downloading music, googling acquaintances, blogging, checking facebook, or IM-ing his friends.
Students like Bil are becoming increasingly common on college campuses all over the world. Can engage in behavior such as computer use actually be considered an addiction? Addiction used to mean abuse of substances such as drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. These days though, the word is also being applied to Internet use, gambling, sex, shopping, cell phone use, and even travel.
